Though he was never a standout player or "star", Yasuhiro Yoshida's steady contributions over a 13-year career with Shimizu S-Pulse offer a compilation of statistics that speak for themselves. Yoshida played most of his career in deep midfield, and in many ways he can be viewed as the "shadow" of his more illustrious midfield teammate, Masaaki Sawanobori. Although Yoshida spent a few years early in his career with the Kashima Antlers and Sanfrecce Hiroshima (which at the time were enjoying greater success than S-Pulse), the highlights of both players' careers came around the turn of the century, when they teamed up in the S-Pulse midfield and took their team to an Asian club title. It is fitting, then, that both players retired on the same day, at the end of 2005, as icons of Shimizu's first decade of existence. But wait! Those who love watching reruns and cheaply-produced sequels were thrilled to discover, some time around mid-2007, that Yoshida . . . along with a number of other long-since-retired old-timers . . . had found their way into a team that was trying to make a bid for J.League promotion, and that if all went smoothly, they could soon be J.League players once more. Sure enough, FC Gifu won promotion to the J2 in 2008, and Yoshida, along with a number of other "retirees", was rewarded for his services with a chance to play one last season in the J2. This has become a fairly common sight, in recent years, so dont be shocked when other members of the "J.League Hall of Fame" turn up on the playing field this season.
