Akira Narahashi was a very skilled two-way wing back, with a skill set not unlike that of Roberto Carlos, though on the opposite side of the field. Narahashi is a very aggressive one-on-one defender, who is rarely outdribbled on the wing. However, his greatest strength is his ability to overlap on the wing in support of the attack. He also has a very hard shot with either foot. Along with teammate Naoki Soma, who plays wing back on the left side, the two give the Antlers an outside threat that prevents opposing teams from bunching up in the middle to double-team the offensive players.

Narahashi entered the J.League as a defensive midfielder, with Bellmare Hiratsuka, but Zico spotted his two-way skills early on, and lured him to Kashima to play the wing back position. Narahashi earned 35 national team caps, and played an important role in the 1998 World Cup squad. Although he did not made an appearance for the team after Phillippe Troussier took over as head coach, following the Frenchman's departure he again saw some action at the national team level. As the Antlers brought in younger players, Narahashi became one of the senior members and team leaders, drawing on his tremendous experience, with over 300 cap. Even as his playing days wound down, he continued to contribute to the Antlers' success for many years.

Finally, as age began to catch up with him and he lost a starting role at Kashima, Narahashi accepted a transfer to Shonan Bellmare, allowing him to end his career where he began it, on the beaches of southern Kanagawa.
