 | Daisuke Oku was an unusual character: a player who was neither very big nor fast, nor even particularly skillful in technical terms, but who somehow always seemed to be right in the center of some of the J.League's best teams. A look at his resume shows that Oku took part in a large number of championship contests and there is no question that he can be described as "a winner". Some would say that Oku owes his success to his teammates, having played for Jubilo Iwata and Yokohama Marinos -- two of the J.League's top teams -- at a time when they were at the top of their success.
But that would be unfair to Oku, who was always a hard-working and busy midfielder with a very good understanding of where to be on the pitch at any given time. He provided a balance to the squad which somehow allowed the players around him to function more effectively. It is probably this positional skill that won him over two dozen national team caps, over the years. It certainly cant be his dribbling ability, or his scoring sense (one J.League watcher described him as "the human black hole", because "once you send the ball to him, you can be sure it is never coming back out"). |
But even his greatest detractors will have a hard time arguing that Oku was on a lot of winning teams. Surely his coaches must have seen something in him to constantly award him a starting role in a championship squad. The constant activity that he contributed in midfield seemed to have a positive influence on his teams, and though he was forced to move to less competitive clubs in order to get playing time, as he neared the end of his career, he was always able to make the players around him somehow look better, even when the black hole that surrounded him prevented him from taking the spotlight himself.
