Seiichiro Okuno played for Omiya Ardija for the first eight years of the team's J.League existence, and was one of the most respected members of the team, holding the captaincy even after he stopped featuring as a regular starter. Okuno was also one of the longest-playing members of the Yokohama Flugels team that hoisted an Emperor's Cup trophy in the final match of the team's existence. Foillowing the collapse of the Flugels, Okuno -- who was still fairly young and had less than 30 apppearances under his belt -- was rejected by the Yokohama Marinos, as well as by Nagoya Grampus (the other team that scooped up a large number of Flugels refugees), and found himself torn between staying with Yokohama as it tried to rebuild, or joining a club in the newly created J2. Okuno opted to join the Saitama Squirrels, and quickly established himself as one of the core members of the team.

Okuno spent most of his time on the bench in 2006, having been edged out of the lineup by the duo of Yukio Tsuchiya and Toninho. Although he is a very aggressive central defender, Okuno had a tendency to get caught in possession and with his pace waning even faster as his age advanced. Eventually, time caught up with him, and he hung up his boots at the end of the 2007 season.
