As a young defender fresh out of Ichiritsu Funabashi High School, Kenji Haneda signed a high-profile contract with the Kashima Antlers and was tapped as a member of Japan's U-20 team, showing a great deal of early promise. Unfortunately, Haneda somehow developed an uncanny talent for putting the ball into the back of his own net. This streak of misfortune was so pronounced that he even earned the nickname "Own-Goal Haneda". The self-immolation reached its climax at the 2001 World Youth Championships, in Argentina, when he captured unwanted headlines worldwide by scoring twice against his own team in the course of just three matches. His national team career was obliterated, and even at the club level his star fell dramatically. As a result, he was relegated to the role of a backup player, at best, and had a difficult time escaping the infamy he had earned in his early years.

Finally, a transfer to J2 club Cerezo Osaka allowed him to get back into regular action, and bit by bit he has regained some of the confidence that he displayed in his early years. Though now playing at a much lower level than many expected when he first broke into the league, at least it looks like Haneda has recovered from the infamy of his youth, and perhaps he can now establish himself as a regular starter, at last..
