Cerezo captain Hiroaki Morishima is a small and slightly built offensive midfielder, who more than makes up for his shortcomings in size with great hustle and determination. For nearly a decade, he served as the heart and soul of the Cerezo team. Morishima played forward for a while when he was younger, even playing that position for the national team once or twice. However, his role as the field general and ball distributor in Cerezo's highly fluid attack suits him perfectly.

Morishima has excellent ball control, great vision, and above all, boundless energy that sees him running from one end of the field to the other for a full 90 minutes. Even as he has moved into the latter stages of his career, his work rate is tremendous (though nowadays he can generally only maintain it for about 60-70 minutes a match). Despite his short statrure, his excellent body control makes him very dangerous in the air. Though his scoring skills are formidable, he is at his best when feeding his teammates, often passing up a good shot of his own to gift a teammate with an even easier finish.

Morishima managed to battle his way into the national team for a total of 65 caps and 12 goals. The most important of his career was definitely the header that he drilled home against Tunisia in the 2002 World Cup, which allowed Japan to finish atop their group and go through to the second round. Unfortunately, that was also his last chance at glory. He played a few minutes as a substitute in th next match, against Turkey, and then was never called up to the national team again.

Although Morishima is now in his mid-30s, the boundless energy that he still demonstrates may allow him to continue for another two or three years, at least. He has already passed the 100 goal mark in his J.League career, and is now chasing the 400 match plateau, which would be an unprecedented accomplishment. Not even Kazu Miura or Gon Nakayama can match BOTH of those figures. He may not have earned quite as high a profile as the other legends of his generation, but the numbers do not lie. Morishima is one of the most dynamic and effective players ever to set foot on a J.League pitch.
