Tomoyuki Hirase is something of an enigma. Several times in the early part of his career, he put together a string of performances that suggested he might be on his way to becoming a high-scoring forward and a potential fixture in the national team. But as soon as he annointed as the "forward of the future", he fell into a slump that relegated him to relative obscurity. Hirase was one of the top scorers on the Under-20 team which finished second in the World Youth Championship in Nigeria, but dropped off the radar screen as soon as that tournament ended. Given a second chance in the Olympic qualifiers, he put on a blazing goal streak for about three months, but then fell into a slump that saw him go almost a year without scoring.
| One possible reason for his up-and-down performance is that Hirase is a "pure scorer" in the negative sense of the word. He may be able to put the ball away, when given a chance, but he does not have particularly strong dribbling skills, and he has trouble holding the ball in traffic. As the years have passed, Hirase has not done much to improve his weaknesses, and in the mean time, the league has passed him by, with defenses growing tighter and opponents learning his favourite moves. After the Antlers tired of his weak performances, they tried to deal him away, first to the Marinos (on loan) and then to Vissel Kobe on a full transfer.
A drop into the J2 served to further highlight Hirase's shortcomings. In thirty J2 appearances for Vissel Kobe, in 2006, he scored only three times, suggesting that his finishing skills have deserted him. A player who once was among the most prolific youngsters in Japan now struggles to find the net in the J2. Hirase failed to rebound in 2007, and Vissel gave up on him as well. Though Hirase managed to arrange a move to Vegalta Sendai in 2008, unless he can rediscover his scoring touch, his career may be nearing an end.
