Chikara Fujimoto is a hard-working journeyman midfielder who has managed to make important contributions to every team he has played for in over a decade of J1 football. Though his technical skills may not be a match for some of the more well-known playmakers that Japan has produced over the years, his quick feet, excellent stamina and constant hustle go a long way towards offseting this demerit. Indeed, Fujimoto even managed to win calls to the national team in the latter stages of Phillippe Troussier's reign.

Fujimoto's excellent work rate is a reflection of his energetic and effusive personality. Though he has spent most of his career on midtable teams, and knows the depressing side of the sport quite well, he always seems to have a smile on his face, and can usually be counted on to do something that will lift the spirits of his teammates. A native of Tokushima, Fujimoto is best known for the "Awa Odori" dance that he performs after scoring a goal.

Fujimoto entered the J.League with Avispa Fukuoka, but he first made a name for himself following a move to Hiroshima, when Avispa were relegated in 1998. The four years that he spent at Sanfrecce marked the high point of his career, where his scoring partnership with Tatsuhiko Kubo earned both a breif trial on the national team. But relegation woes forced Fujimoto to move again in 2003, rather than take a large cut in pay and follow Sanfrecce into the J2. Fujimoto didnt quite fit in at his next two stops -- Nagoya Grampus and Vissel Kobe -- but he still managed to contrubue with over 20 appearances in both 2003 and 2004.

In 2005, Fujimoto joined recently promoted Omiya Ardija, and quickly found his way back into a starting role. He established himself as an important contributor in the midfield buildup, and was voted player of the year by fans. Unfortunately, he had an injury-hit season in 2006, and although he still managed to chip in with his fair share of goals, he was overshadowed by the exploits of Daigo Kobayashi, who took over the role of creating offence for the Mighty Squirrels.

Though Daigo is clearly the franchise player for Omiya, now, and young Hayato Hashimoto showing good promise, Fujimoto might find himself squeezed out of the starting eleven this season. Nevertheless, we think that he can still make useful contributions as a veteran presence and as a hard-working "sparkplug" to bring of the bench when the team needs a quick boost. Although not naturally left footed, Fujimoto played on the left wing in 2006, and this versatility means that he should be a very useful "squad player" as he enters the declining years of his career.
