Former National Team member Yasuhiro Hato was capped 15 times under Philippe Troussier, but never quite made the grade and was dropped from the squad just before the 2002 World Cup. Hato joined the Squirrels from relegated Kashiwa Reysol at the beginning of the 2006 season along with Yukio Tsuchiya. Unlike his 32-year-old teammate, Hato endured a rather difficult first season in the orange shirt.

Though Troussier liked his aggressive play and work rate, Hato is still prone to basic errors, and his pace has fallen off with age. Though viewed as a very quick-footed player in his early years with the Flugels and Marinos, nowadays he has trouble against pacey wingers, and tends to lunge in unnecessarily or get caught in possession. Ardija fans generally agree that Takuro Nishimura, who preceeded Hato at right back, was unlucky to be replaced, and it remains to be seen whether the new coach will give the former NT player as much time in the lineup as coach Miura did.
