Toshiya Fujita began playing professional football while still attending Tsukuba University, during the J.League's first season. He joined Jubilo Iwata, a well-established team that had its roots in the former Yamaha football cub. Though Jubilo became a professional team in 1992, it did not win a spot in the J.League during the League's initial season. The following year, however, Fujita graduated from university and in the same year, Jubilo joined the J.League as one of the first teams promoted from the reorganised JFL. Fujita immediately won a spot as one of the team's starting midfielders, and over the next nine seasons he played an extremely important role in helping build the team into one of the J.League's most successful franchises.
 | Although Fujita never earned the sort of fame and accolades that teammates like Masashi Nakayama and Hiroshi Nanami have enjoyed, this is mainly a reflection of his low-key manner and quiet efficiency. Though not particularly flashy, anyone who has followed the team for any length of time quickly realised what an essential role Fujita played in providing the transition to attack, setting up the final pass, breaking down counterattacks and most of all, keeping the entire team on the same page. His contributions were finally recognised in 1999, when he was made team captain and won the league MVP award. While he has only had a dozen or so calls to the full national team, this is more a tribute to the players who started ahead of him (individuals such as Hidetoshi Nakata, Shinji Ono and Shunsuke Nakamura) rather than a critical reflection on Fujita. He was always a very solid player, with good instincts and understanding of the game. Though not particularly fast or "athletic", he has excellent passing skills, deceptively good moves, and the ability to locate the open spaces in the opposition's defence.
In mid-2003, Fujita joined FC Utrecht, a middle-table team in the Eredivisie. Though the team struggled to match the performances of Holland's top tier teams, Fujita made a very useful contribution during his stay. Unfortunately, Fujita was already on the downward slope of his career, and although Utrecht seemed pleased with his contributions, they clearly did not intend to keep him. In a bizarre bit of arrogance, Utrecht even ignored Jubilo's repeated requests to pay the rental fee. Thus at the end of 2003, with the Eredivisie still in mid-season, Jubilo voided the contract and called Fujita back to Japan. Eventually Utrecht paid up on its rental bill, but this is one of several incidents that have made Japanese players somewhat leery of signing with Dutch clubs.

After one last season of productive contributions at Jubilo, Fujita was forced to move along as younger rivals edged him out of the lineup. In 2005 he accepted a mid-season transfer to Nagoya Grampus -- a young team that needed some veterans with experience and leadership to give the team a solid core. Although he no longer is able to start regularly, Fujita continues to contribute, with 24 appearances and two goals in 2006. SInce he has just two more goals to reach the watershed of 100 in his career, we would expect him to stick it out for at least another year or two, albeit as a bit-player, rather than in a starring role.
