Hiroshi Nanami established himself as one of the most consistent midfielders Japan has produced, and though younger players like Hidetoshi Nakata and Shunsuke Nakamura eventually eclipsed him as a national team "star", he continued to make steady contributions for both club and country for more than a decade. While he has very good offensive skills, Nanami's role on Jubilo Iwata is more defensive, and he certaily has the ability to play a role in the back line if called upon.

Nanami developed his two-way skills playing alongside Carlos Dunga, which perhaps explains both his fine defensive abilities and his skill in moving quickly onto the attack once he has won the ball. After several successful years with Jubilo, Nanami was signed by Serie A side Venezia in 1999. Unfortunately, Nanami had a poor season in Italy, and returned to Japan after Venezia was demoted to Serie B at the end of the 99-00 season. However, he rose above this disappointment to contribute a star performance in the Asian Cup in late 2000. His MVP selection in that tournament established him once again as one of the top midfielders in Japan -- a reputation he continued to strengthen with Jubilo over the next several seasons.

However, time catches up to everyone, and as Nanami passed the age of 33, his spot in the starting lineup was gradually assumed by younger players such as Yoshiaki Ota and Naoya Kikuchi. By early 2006 he was spending most of his time on the bench, and he asked Jubilo to deal hium away to another club where he could play more regularly. Nanami moved to Cerezo Osaka, just in time to ride the relegation escalator down to J2. Though this is quite a setback for a former league MVP, we think that Nanami can still contribute for a few more seasons at a less competitive club. It will be interesting to see whether he maintains a starting role at Cerezo in 2007
