Yamazaki Nabisco Cup, 2005

The Yamazaki Nabisco Cup is the annual J.League cup tournament. The tournament takes place over the course of the regular J.League season, with most matches scheduled on holidays that come in the middle of a week, or on weekends when no league matches are scheduled. Although it is not quite as prestigeous as the Emperor's Cup (which, like the FA Cup in Britain, includes teams from all divisions and even university and high school champion teams), the Nabisco Cup has nevertheless become an important part of the annual J.League schedule.

The format for the Nabisco Cup has changed several times, but the use of pool groups to determine the final eight teams seemed to be a very successful format, and it has been retained every year since 2003. On the other hand, there were many complaints in 2004 about the single-elimination format of the knockout tournament, which favoured the team that hosted the match. In 2005 the knockout round returned to a home-and-away competition, in order to address these complaints.

With 18 teams in the J1 division, the structure of pool groups might have been awkward, but the league decided to address two problems at once, by giving the Yokohama Marinos and Jubilo Iwata a bye to the quarterfinal round. This not only made the group round equitable (four pools of three teams each); it also reduced the scheduling burden on the two teams that had to take part in the Asian Champions League. Although the exact dates of Nabisco Cup and ACL contests do not quite match, at least the total number of matches that these teams play, over the course of the year, will be about the same as those who are not involved in the ACL.
