 | Yuichiro Nagai entered the Urawa Reds organisation while still in high school, and he showed such promise that the team sent him off to Germany at the age of 20 to get some experience on the taxi squad of Karlsruhe SC. Though he only saw limited action in Germany, his training with a professional organisation gave him sufficiently good basics that Phillippe Troussier selected him from relative obscurity to play on the U-20 squad in Nigeria, where his sparkling runs down the flank captured a great deal of attention.
| Unfortunately, Nagai suffered a string of minor injuries after his return to the J.League, which prevented him from showing much of his abilities during the 2000 season, and he dropped out of the NT picture soon after the "golden generation" completed their run to the Sydney Olympics. However, his speed and elusiveness in making the cut to the middle definitely offers a dimension that is valuable in the J.League. In 2003, he even received a few caps in the full national team, scoring a goal in his first NT appearance in a 1-0 victory against Korea. Though his skills are not quite broad enough to allow him to play effectively at the international level, his contributions to the Reds' title run in 2006 were significant enough. | |
At the end of the championship season, Nagai tired of playing second fiddle to obviously more well-rounded strikers like Washington, and requested a move to a club that would give him more playing time. Ventforet Kofu were happy to pick him up on rental, and it will be interesting to see if he can make the best of this opportunity to play regularly. |
