Tatsuya Tanaka has never let his diminutive size interfere with his desire to be the "biggest presence on the pitch". The irrepressable striker has always been a bundle of energy and a player who can explode for a sudden flurry of goals at any moment. As a teenager fresh from Teikyo High School, Tanaka captured the hearts of Reds fans with a brilliant rookie season that included 3 goals in just 5 starts (19 appearances total). Not bad numbers for a rookie.

Over the next two years "Tatsuya" steadily polished his skills, and became a core member of both the Reds and the Athens Olympic team in 2004. Though goals are certainly an area where he is proficient, his darting speed and nimble footwork make him an extremely dangerous penetrator, allowing him to create as many goals for teammates as he scores himself.

Unfortunately, the first major injury of his career could not have come at a more untortunate time. Called up to the National Team by Zico for the East Asian championships in 2005, almost as an afterthought, Tanaka suddenly found himself thrust into a starting role after Zico's "first team" lost a narrow contest to North Korea and the coach responded by changing all eleven players. Prior to that moment, he had only one NT cap as a substitute, and had not distinguished himself much in a 23-minute appearance. But Tatsuya seized the opportunity to start against China in both hands, scoring a goal and standing out as the obvious man of the match. But in the final minute of that match, he was taken down by a vicious foul which broke his leg. Just as he seemed to be on the verge of breaking into the national team, his hopes of making an appearance in Germany were erased.

It took nearly a year for Tatsuya to recover, and though he did manage to score four goals in the 2006 campaign, he was only a marginal contributor to the Reds' championship run. Reds fans will be hoping to see a full recovery in 2007, though it may be a while before he can work his way back into a position to win calls to the National Team.
