Keisuke Tsuboi's football career received a late start, since he opted to finish a university education first, and despite his impressive contributions to the Japan Universiade team, during the late 1990s, he did not receive much publicity for these accomplishments due to the dismissive view that many people have of "schoolboy soccer". However, he certainly made up for lost time, establishing himself as a starter within the first few weeks of his rookie season, and going on to collect the J.League's Rookie of the Year honors in 2002. Since then he has only gotten better, winning a place in the National Team as soon as Zico took the reins, and soon capturing a starting spot in central defence.

Tsuboi has a wide range of skills that seem to be only improving as he gets more J.League experience under his belt. His one-on-one defensive ability is among the best in the league, and he seems able to mark top-class strikers without resort to unnecessary gamesmanship or physical contact. He completed his rookie season with 30 starts and not a single yellow card! He also can dribble well, and as he has gains confidence, is starting to make occasional forays into attack, when given the chance. Most important, though, he has blazing speed which allows him to outpace even some of the fastest strikers in the game. These skills caught Zico's eye very early on, and from the moment he took over as NT coach, Tsuboi was included in the roster.
Tragically, however, the young defender's career was derailed just as it was starting to take off. In July 2004, during a match against Slovakia, Tsuboi was run down brutally from behind by an opposing player, and ripped his hammstring, putting him out of action completely for almost six months. Even when he returned, his play did not immediately rebound, as is often the case for players who damage their hamstrings. He was not only a step slower, but his mobility was noticably compromised. It was not until the latter half of 2005 that he began to regain his former sharpness (though in a typical show of loyalty, Zico continued to name Tsuboi to the NT for high profile competitions like the 2005 Confederations Cup, even though he had yet to recover his full ability). By early 2006, Tsuboi was back as a fairly regular contributor, which was a big relief to those observers (like the Rising Sun News) who began to get gastritis pains every time they saw Makoto Tanaka take the field.
|
Tsuboi managed to fight his way back into the lineup in time for the 2006 World Cup, but based on the team's poor performance in that tournament, and his own unique vision of what defenders should contribute, Ivica Osim has not called him up since taking over as NT coach. We do not think this will continue indefinitely, though. Tsuboi offers too many dimensions (speed, intelligence and even reasonable attacking skills) to be ignored altogether. But if he does fail to regain a NT spot, the Reds management will probably view that as good news. All of Tsuboi's injury problems in recent years have come while on national team duty. For the Reds, Tsuboi's full contributions will be essential if they are to repeat as champions and also put on a strong showing in the the Asian Champions League.
