Tsukasa Umesaki established himself quickly as a "player of the future", impressing coaches in Oita Trinita's youth programme enough to earn swift selection by the pro club, before the local high school power -- Kunimi HS -- could get their hands on the youngster. When coach Pericles Chamusca arrived in Oita in 2005, he was instantly impressed by the 18-year-old and called him up from the youth squad for three starts in the latter stages of the 2005 season. By the following March, Umesaki was a central part of Chamusca's midfield strategy, and he also was a core member of the U-19 squad that claimed a spot in the 2007 World Youth Championships.

But while Trinita was hoping to assign Umesaki an even larger role in 2007, a scout from French Division 2 club Grenoble Foot 38 noticed Umesaki at the Asian youth championships and quickly began courting the youngster in hopes of bringing him to Europe. When Umesaki's U-20 teammate Sho Ito agreed to a transfer to Grenoble. in early January, it provided a further incentive for Umesaki to make the move. Rather than stand in the way of a very promising player's prospects for further growth, Trinita agreed to a six-month rental contract that will send Umesaki to France. We will be watching to see whether either Umesaki or Ito will develop quickly enough to get playing time before their contracts expire.
