Nobuhisa Yamada put in nine years as a dependable but relatively unheralded right wing before ever gaining attention as a potential national team candidate. Some would argue that this was because he played for a relatively unimpressive team, and there is certainly some truth to that. The Reds have always been fiercely supported by their local fans, but their record of wins and losses is pretty weak, and they have the dubious distinction of being the first of the J.League's original members to have been relegated to the J2.

But there are other factors to consider as well, one of which is the fact that Yamada has played much of his professional career in a position that does not suit him. A player with fine speed and good defensive instincts, as well as a fairly accurate cross, Yamada seems cut out to play midfield wing, or the side back in a four-man back line. But with the Reds, he has often found himself serving in central midfield or even as a second striker. More importantly, though, Yamada was a late bloomer. He got a fair number of starts during the first five or six years of his career but tended to lose the ball to easily, and did not find the net often. However, he has improved steadily over the years, and by the early 00s he was beginning to overcome his weaknesses in dribbling and shooting, while using his superior capabilities in running the overlap and crossing to the middle effectively. Zico selected him as a wing back in late 2002, and in what may have been the highlight of his career, he had a strong performance as a regular starter in the 2003 Confederations Cup.

Age is beginning to creep up on Yamada, but he was still able to make a valuable contribution to the Reds' first championship in 2006, as the team captain and a regular performer even in matches that he didnt start. Yamada has always been a fan favourite, and Reds fans will be hoping that this "late bloomer" can continue to make that sort of contribution for several years to come.
