Akihiro Hyodo was snapped up by Shimizu S-Pulse following his graduation from Tsukuba University, in 2005, and immediately found himself making regular curtain calls in the second half of key matches. The young midfielder was looking forward to a more regular starting role in 2006, and might have claimed a full-time spot on the left wing if it had not been for a congenital heart problem that at one point seemed to threaten his playing career altogether. Though this illness plagued him for much of the season in 2006, he was back to his old tricks as the late contributor off the bench by the end of the season.
There is no doubt that Hyodo has the potential to be one of S-Pulse's most influential players. Generally used as a right-sided midfielder, his penetrating runs and accurate crosses make him one of the sharpest weapons in the Wingheads' attack. He is also accurate from long-range, and often shares set-piece duties with fellow midfielder Jungo Fujimoto. Regardless of what the doctors say, this kid has a fantastic heart, and we join S-Pulse fans in wishing him a complete recovery to health, allowing him to realise even more of his potential in 2007.
