Kazumichi Takagi is a tall, robust central defender. The 26-year-old has been at the club since 2000, but only really established himself in the team over the past two seasons. Takagi is especially strong in the air, and is usually given the task of man-marking the opposing centre forward. Not the most accurate passer, Takagi often opts for the ":safety first" option, and still has not developed a flair for the steady build-up from the back. However, he has formed a formidable partnership with fellow youngster Naoki Aoyama, in central defence, and thus displaced uber-veteran Toshihide Saito, prompting Saito's release at the end of 2006. Takagi looks set to remain at the heart of the Shimizu defence for the foreseeable future.
