Yoichi Doi is a veteran goaltender who established himself as a solid and dependable contributor from the very early years of the J.League. Unfortunately, due to the fact that he has played for relatively weak club teams, he never gained much attention from the National Team prior to 2002. However, Doi always had a reputation as a calm, steady performer with excellent reflexes. His reaction time and anticipation makes him perhaps the best of all Japan's keepers in PK shootouts. However, he is also the type of player who prefers to stay on his line unless forced to come out. This was a liability under the Trousserian "flat three" system, which required keepers to have a great deal of speed off the line. As a result, Doi did not get his first call-up to the national team until Zico took over as coach.

In 2003, several standout performances in the J.League caught Zico's eye, and at the age of 30, Doi got his first call to the national team. Though he was not able to displace Kawaguchi and Narazaki, as the top choices in net, his wealth of experience and calm presence seem to have won Zico's loaylty, and Doi has been called back repeatedly, even though he rarely sees action, as the "Number Three" keeper. Doi got his first NT cap in February 2004, against Malaysia. He was the third keeper on the roster in the 2006 World Cup, and he continues to be a commanding presence at the back for FC Tokyo. Based on his statistics in 2006, and the fact that FC Tokyo has no other keeper on staff with the skills to replace him, Doi is likely to remain the top choice between the posts for the Capitol City Blues for many years to come.
