![]() March 20, 2005Second Nabisco Round Offers Little ClarityHere are the scores of the second-round matches:
Pool AIn Pool A, the Urawa Reds established themselves as the clear group favourite with a 2-1 victory in the "Saitama Derby" clash with cross-town rivals Omiya Ardija. The Reds raced out to an early lead with strikes from Tatsuya Tanaka and Emerson (both on powerful low drives from the edge of the box, after another player's shot was blocked or deflected). However, after Marcus Tulio Tanaka limped off with a strained muscle, just before half time, the momentum shifted and the Reds found themselves hanging on desperately over the final minutes. Ardija dominated play for much of the second half, and a low-angle header by Dasisuke Tomita in the 65 minute, to finish off a set play, pulled Omiya to within a goal. However, fine goalkeeping by Ryota Tsuzuki down the stretch preserved the Reds victory, and they climb ahead of Omiya to a clear lead in the group. In the battle between last week's two losers, a goal by Yoshito Terakawa just before half time was all that separated Albirex Niigata and Vissel Kobe, in what was a very fierce and scrappy but not particularly pretty contest. Kobe had a golden opportunity to level, shortly after the restart, when Yoshiaki Maruyama was judged to have brought down Ryuji Bando in the penalty area. But keeper Yosuke Nozawa guessed correctly and made a beautiful diving save to turn away Bando's PK attempt.
Pool BKawasaki Frontale will be kicking themselves for their failure to climb on top of this group, and can only blame themselves for their failure to collect three points this week. A last-second equaliser by Gamba Osaka's Masanobu Matsunami robbed them of victory, after they had managed to fight back from a self-inflicted early deficit. Gamba, playing with a somewhat understrength squad (due to NT commitments) received an early gift from Frontale when a relatively harmless cross into the box was deflected by a Frontale defender into his own net. However, Frontale's offence was running quite smoothly, and they equalised before half time thanks to a set play finished off by Shuhei Terada. Shortly after the half, Kawasaki moved out in front after Juninho finished off a thundering counterattack. With at least 110 seconds of the two minutes added time already in the books, Gamba mace one last dash forward, and a cross from the right wing found Masanobu Matsunami, whose diving header rescued a point for Gamba and kept them atop Pool B.However, Gamba's "lead" in the group was reduced to just an edge in goal difference, as Tokyo Verdy snatched a hard-fought win from Sanfrecce Hiroshima. The only goal of the contest came just before half time, on a corner kick that was finished off by Washington.
Pool CThough the season is still young, JEF United must already be very tired of seeing their local rivals, Kashiwa Reysol. If you include the annual "Chibagin Cup" exhibition match, which was played a week before the start of the regular season, these two teams have already played three "Chiba Derby" matches this year, and Reysol holds the clear advantage with two wins and a draw. Things were looking good for JEF in the first half, as they managed to dictate the tempo and scored the opener on a strike by Yuki Abe. But immediately after the break, things began to go seriously wrong. First, the team's rookie striker Mitsuki Ichihara displayed just a bit too much initiative, chasing back on defence all the way to his own penalty area and pulling down Choi Song-Guk to concede a penalty kick. After Cleber collected from the spot, Reysol began to pick up their performance, and used the wings well to create several close chances. With five minutes left to play, a cross found veteran midfielder Tadatoshi Masuda at the edge of the box, and he fired a hard drive into the left corner to give Reysol the lead. Though JEFdominated the final five minutes of play, desperately seeking the equaliser, Reysol hung on for the win, and moved into a strong position atop the group, with 6 points.FC Tokyo, meanwhile, will have a difficult time defending their Nabisco Cup title if they cannot pick up their offensive skills a bit. The capitol city crusaders seemed to be sitting pretty at half time after a second yellow card on Koji Arimura just moments before the halftime whistle reduced Oita Trinita to ten men. But try as they might, FC Tokyo simply couldnt manage to put the ball in the net, and when time finally ran out on them, they were booed off the pitch by 14,000 home fans, who were surely expecting a bit more fireworks from their team, under the circumstances. As a result, Trinita and FC Tokyo share last place with perfectly identical records.
Pool DPool D remains the most muddled of the lot. Even Nagoya Grampus, who have yet to collect a point, will still be thinking that they are in the race. Shimizu S-Pulse have been surprisingly competitive this season, under the leadership of coach Kenta Hasegawa, and they demonstrated their improving team cohesion with a clear-cut win over Cerezo Osaka. The best news of all for the Wingheads will be the return to form of right wing Daisuke Ichikawa, who has been plagued by injury and self-doubt over the past two years and was nearly given up for lost. This week he turned in a solid performance -- the first we can recall since . . . . well . . . before the 2002 World Cup. Near the end of the first half, a perfectly weighted cross from Ichikawa on the wing found Keisuke Ota for a right-footed half-volley, putting S-Pulse in the lead. Cerezo pressed furiously for the equaliser throughout the second half, but as time ran down and their efforts became increasingly desperate, an S-Pulse counterattack sent Hideaki Kitajima dashing clear to deliver the coup-de-grace.Meanwhile, Nagoya Grampus continued to underperform, falling to a severely depleted Kashima Antlers squad on a last-minute goal by Alex Mineiro. Grampus got off to an early lead with defender Makoto Kakuda scoring on a set play, but Kakuda would go from hero to goat in the second half. The Antlers, who were missing four regular starters due to national team obligations, equalised just before the half, on a long strike by Fernando. Midway through the second half, Kakuda -- who picked up one yellow card very early in the contest -- came in for an ill-considered challenge on Masaki Fukai and sent the diminutive midfielder flying like a cardboard box hit by a speeding truck. The referee didnt even have to think twice, going straight to his pocket and sending Kakuda to the showers (the announcers at first thought it was a straight red, which would not have been completely undeserved, but the scoresheet shows that he received two yellows, resulting in expulsion). With the man advantage, Kashima stepped up the pressure, and as the match moved into injury time, Takeshi Aoki made a charge into the box, and though his effort was broken up by the defence, Alex Mineiro pounced on the rebound and drove it into the net to give Kashima the win.
March 20, 2005A Cracker of a Start to the Nabisco CupThough several teams were slightly understrength, due to the absence of national team members, the Nabisco Cup got off to a cracking start on Saturday, with several eye-opening upsets and a host of high-scoring shootouts. With the second round of pool matches taking place next weekend, we should get a pretty good sense of which teams are in a strong position and which are at risk of getting knocked out in the pool stage. For starters, here are the scores of the first-round matches, held on Saturday:
Pool AOmiya Ardija, who have surprised many people with their strong start in regular League action (a win and a draw in their first two matches) Provided additional evidence to suggest that their early record is no fluke, cruising to a comfortable victory over Albirex Niigata with two first-half goals from Daisuke Tomita and Christian Dionisio. Albirex made wholesale changes at half time, and were able to prevent any further scoring by the mighty squirrels, but they were also unable to produce much offence on their own end. Ardija hung on for the win, and took top place in Pool A on the benefit of goal difference.Omiya's cross-town neighbours, the Urawa Reds, delivered a very similar performance as Nobuhisa Yamada and Emerson found the target to give Urawa a 2-0 halftime lead. However, Vissel Kobe were spurred on buy a surprisingly large home crowd of nearly 30,000, and mamaged to pull a goal back midway through the second half on a strike by veteran Kazu Miura. Once again, it was Miura's strke partner Ryuji Bando who did most of the work to produce the goal, but the 37-year-old Kazu is doing a fine job of finishing off the plays for Vissel, and has already found the net three times this season. Unfortunately for Kobe, that was all the offence they could muster, and they dropped the decision to Urawa by as 2-1 score line.
Pool BThe first two matches in Pool B suggest that this group could provide some amazing fireworks before iot is decided which two teams will advance to the quarterfinal round. Though the defending may be a bit supect, all four of the teams in this pool demonstrated their ability to find the net with aplomb. At Osaka's Banpaku Stadium, Sanfrecce Hiroshima took the lead on an early goal by Susumu Oki, but Gamba came roaring back to get the equalizer just a minute later, on a set play which Sidiclei finished off with a header. Gamba's new acquisition Araujo added a goal on the stroke of half time to give Gamba a 2-1 lead as they retreated to the locker room.Shortly after the break, Oki got his second goal of the match to bring Hiroshima level, but once again, Gamba responded immediately with a surge of pressure culminating in a goal from Kota Yoshihara. Ten minutes later, Fernandinho put the match out of reach and Gamba claimed a 4-2 victory, as well as the top spot in Pool B. The most remarkable contest of the day, however, was the shootout between Tokyo Verdy and Kawasaki Frontale, in which eight goals were scored, all at the same end of the pitch.= Frontale rouared out to an early lead, as two goals from defender Shuhei Terada were supplemented by single tallies from Juninho and Marcus, giving Frontale what looked like an insurmountable lead at half time. But as soon as the two teams changed ends, the momentum swung in the exact opposite direction. Washington got Verdy's first tally of the match just 4 minutes after half time, and in the subsequent ten minutes, Daigo Kobayashi and Takayuki Morimoto added strikes to put Verdy back in contention. The subsequent 30 minutes of play were ferocious as both teams threw everything they ahd into the offence. In the end, it was the teen sensation Morimoto who found the nylon, scoring the equaliser with less than ten minutes left on the clock. Though the final few minutes was wild and wooly, neither team could add to the scoresheet, and the contest ended in a 4-4 draw.
Pool CIn Pool C, the two Chiba-based clubs recorded almost identical victories to take an equal share of top position in the group. FC Tokyo started off their match against Kashiwa Reysol quite well, and when Naohiro Ishikawa tallied in the 17 minute it looked like they were in a strong position. But Reysol, who are looking quite a bit more competitive this season, responded immediately on a set play, finished by defender Sota Nakazawa, and just five minutes later playmaker Harutaka Ono put Reysol in the lead. After Cleber added an insurance goal shortly After the half, Reysol tightened up their defence and spent the remainder of the contest trying to fend off FC Tokyo's efforts to get back into the contest. Though Tokyo dominated the latter stages of the match, they couldnt find the net, and Reysol held on for the 3-1 victory.JEF United had a bit more difficulty in their contest against Oita Trinita. After a scoreless first half, Daiki Takamatsu put Oita in front just a few minutes after the break with his first goal of the season. However, JEF have been a very strong second-half team this season, and once again they were able to take their performance up a notch over the final 30 minutes of play. Yuki Abe leveled the score line in the 65 minute, and over the next 15 minutes Kohei Kudo and Takenori Hayashi added strikes of their own to leave Trinita in the dust. Though JEF and Reysol share the top spot, JEF have the advantage of having one more home game left than Reysol.
Pool DIn the final pool, Cerezo Osaka surprised almost everyone -- perhaps even themselves -- by claiming the top spot in the group following a 2-1 victory over Nagoya Grampus. Tatsuya Furuhashi, who has been a key source of offence for Cerezo this season following the departure of Yoshito Okubo, got Cerezo on the board early, with a goal in the 18 minute. Grampus equalised shortly after half time, but with two minutes left on the clock veteran Akinori Nishizawa gave his team the victory with a late counterattackign tally.Meanwhile, the Kashima Antlers were held to a 1-1 draw on a late goal by Shimizu S-=Pulse striker Cho Jae-Jin. Fernando gave the Antlers an early lead, but with less than 10 minutes remaining, Cho collected his first goal since joining S-Pulse, and thus earned the home team a share of the points. The Antlers face a bit of a disadvantage, since they have four players in the National Team and thus were more under-strength than any other team taking part in the Nabisco Cup pool round (both Jubilo Iwata and Yokohama Marinos received byes to the quarterfinals, due to their ACL commitments). With that in mind, they will probably be satisfied to claim a point from an away match, but they may not be as lucky next weekend when they face Nagoya Grampus, at home and will again be without the services of Masashi Motoyama, Takayuki Suzuki, Mitsuo Ogasawara and Hitoshi Sogahata.
