Stadiums in Japan: Iwata (Yamaha) Stadium

Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture

Jubilo Iwata Stadium is one of the older stadiums in the league. It was built in 1978, and is beginning to show its age, in some ways. However, Jubilo fans -- and football fans in general -- have a soft spot in their hearts for this grand old facility. With a capacity of either17,800 or 20,000 (depending upon whose figures you trust) Jubilo Iwata Stadium is no longer large enough to handle the crowds for key matches, and as a result, many Jubilo home matches are now played at nearby Shizuoka "Ecopa" Stadium, which was one of the World Cup venues in 2002. But while other stadiums may be larger, few can match the closeness and intimacy of this facility

One of the most unique features of Jubilo Stadium is the double-deck stand in the home end zone. Fans fortunate to get seats along the rail can literally drop popcorn onto the top of the goal net (this is based on experience, though dont try it yourself). There are few facilities anywhere in Japan that are built so close to the pitch. Even in the back row of the most remote corner of this stadium, fans feel close to the action, and sense an intimacy with the players that helps explain why Jubilo enjoys such excellent fan support. It also may come as no surprise that this facility was used by the Japanese national team as their home base for the 2002 World Cup.

Stadium Access

Jubilo Iwata's home stadium, now known as "Yamaha Stadium", is a bit far from the nearest train station, though access by road is quite good, using the Iwata Bypass freeway and national highway Route 1. By train, take the JR Tokaido line to Iwata Station and use the North exit. Shuttle buses to the stadium leave from bus terminal Number 2. There is regular and efficient bus service beginning three hours before kickoff, and the frequency is much better than some of the shuttle bus services operated in the J.League. Buses to Yamaha Stadium also leave from JR Hamamatsu Station (Terminal 10) and from the Hamamatsu store of the Jubilo Official Merchandise shop in Hamamatsu city, though number and frequency is limited..
