Stadiums in Japan: Sendai Stadium
Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture
| Although it may not be able to match the capacity of nearby Miyagi Stadium, which served as one of the venues for World Cup 2002, soccer fans in northern Japan will certainly tell you that Sendai Stadium deserves to receive equal billing in terms of the highlight sports venues of their city. Vegalta Sendai calls Sendai Stadium its true home, and uses Miyagi Stadium only for the matches which require a more massive capacity than the 19,700 that Sendai Stadium can accomodate. The stadium is a very beautiful venue, built exclusively for soccer matches, and with stands build very close to the pitch for a cozy and intimate atmosphere.
Vegalta Sendai is the first team from the Tohoku region (northern Japan) to join the J.League's top-flight division, and the team has always drawn huge crowds. Certainly the team's success is an important part of that performance, but one should not dismiss the impact of having such a beutiful stadium in close proximity to the city. The stadium is just a four-minute walk from a main subway station, providing very quick and convenient access. No doubt the convenience and beauty of the city and the stadium were key considerations for the national team of Italy, which based its training camp at Sendai Stadium during the 2002 World Cup. | |
