Thijs Libregts takes over Nigerian national team

First Published: Aug 26, 1998

Nigeria have named former Dutch national coach Thijs Libregts as their new man in charge.

The 57 year old has to prepare for an African Nations' Cup tie in Ougadougou against Burkina Faso on October 4th which will mark the return of the Super Eagles to the competition after a ban.

Libregts was the subject of a player revolt at the World Cup in 1990 led against him by then internationals Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. The players forced Libregts to step down in a row over tactics and the whole controversy destroyed the chances of the reigning European Champions in Italia 90.
