First Published: Dec 04, 1998

Manchester United have identified Edwin van der Sar as the man they want to replace goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

The Dane is playing his last season for United and is set for a move to France after eight years with the club and Van der Sar will be approached to be his successor next season.

The Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper is an experienced international who has also won the European Cup with Ajax. He has the pedigree United want to seal their place among Europe's elite and they are prepared to spend massively to land a man manager Alex Ferguson sees as a key part of his side's future. He is one of most consistent shot stoppers in the world game and uses his 1.97m frame to dominate in the air.
