Two match ban for angry French goalkeeper

First Published: Dec 14, 1998

French authorities have banned goalkeeper Lionnel Charbonnier for two matches after his walkout from the squad two months ago.

The Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper was unhappy that Bernard Lama was picked to play in front of him against Russia in a Euro 2000 qualifier after an injury to World Cup winner Fabien Barthez. He left the squad in Moscow and headed back to Glasgow in protest at Roger Lemerre's selection.

A month later Charbonnier smashed knee ligaments in a UEFA Cup tie and is out for the rest of the season. The ban from the squad will be served when he returns to fitness and first team action.
