Germany replace France in Confederations Cup

First Published: Dec 22, 1998

Germany are to replace world champions France in the Confederations Cup next summer.

The entire fixture of the tournament was rescheduled to August from next month after French complaints about an inability to field a full strength side and resistance from top European clubs.

The new dates proved unacceptable to the French who were starting their league season at the same time so the world champions refused to take part.

Needing a replacement FIFA have called in European champions Germany who have accepted the offer to play next August in Mexico with seven other teams.
