AS Roma coach highlights drug cheating in Italy

First Published: Jul 27, 1998

AS Roma coach Zdenek Zeman believes the drugs problem in Italian football is being ignored.

His alarming call concerns the use of performance enhancing, rather than recreational, substances. Former Bari player Thomas Doll tested positive for steroids in March but not while he was playing in Italy. Despite this Zeman believes that Italian football has a drugs culture which is growing with every season as sides look to gain a chemically enhanced advantage in the money soaked world of Italian football.

While at Napoli Diego Maradona led them to two championships and a UEFA Cup but also became addicted to cocaine and other stimulants.
