It took Yugoslavia more than an hour to work their way through a packed Irish defence but victory was finally earned by Real madrid star Pedrag Mijatovic.
The Irish ambition was to hold out for a draw but Mijatovic had other ideas. He collected a Stankovic pass and hit a low shot from five metres under Shay Given to win the game.
Ireland claimed two penalties - particularly for a foul on midfielder Jason McAteer in the 53rd minute but they were out of luck but it was a negative display by the Irish who tried all they could to drown any attacking play from the Yugoslav side at its midfield source. Their players ran and ran to close down everything taking their lead from captain Roy Keane but the Yugoslavs worked themselves free of the stragulation in the second half when their passing improved markedly and chances begun to appear in this close and tense match.
