Newcastle coach Ruud Gullit confirmed at the weekend that striker Alan Shearer was not for sale - but admitted that he had only £7 million sign new players.
Gullit says he wants to base his side around Shearer in attack but recent poor performances since a return from inujury have suggested that the England striker is not the player he was and his performances at the recent World Cup did not indicate that he was the world beater many people thought he looked two years ago.
Arsenal are the most interested English club and Chelsea would also bid to try and sign the player but Gullit looks set to work with what previous coach Kenny Dalglish left him. He described that side as a 'relegation' side but the board have told him he must sell to raise money for new players. Shearer remains his only saleable asset.
