Bierhoff says Germany astill needs Matthaeus

New German captain Oliver Bierhoff has backed calls for the return of Lothar Matthaeus to the national squad.

The former World Cup winning captain failed to win his 130th cap last week during the recent Euro 2000 qualifers after withdrawing from Erich Ribbeck's squad through injury. Bierhoff believes that the current form of the player - he has led Bayern Munich into serious title contention again this season - means he should get the chance to increase his tally of caps.
