Manchester United have denied making an offer to Ajax goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Reports last night from Holland said a £6 million transfer fee had been discussed last week by United after they approached the player's agent and the Ajax club.

United want a replacement in the summer for Peter Schmeichel who is set to bow out after nine years at the club in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on May 26th.

The club have searched the world for a suitable replacement and van der Sar fits their criteria but SS Lazio are also interested in the 28 year old. Aston Villa's Australian international goalkeeper Mark Bosnich is out of contract at the end of the season and the favourite to join United in the summer.
