Hungary 1 England 1, April 28th 1999

Kevin Keegan said yesterday at a press conference that the England job was "easy - if you keep winning".

England came away from Budapest tonight with only a draw and should have won the game but Keegan will not be too disappointed. His side dominated the early exchanges but let the victory slip from their grasp. Midfielder Steve McManaman was poor again but is likely to keep his place in the Euro 2000 squads to face Sweden and Bulgaria in the first week of June. New striker Kevin Phillips showed some good touches and sub Michael Gray almost produced a late winner for Shearer with a deep cross from the left. Gray's left foot gave the English side a better shape and balance.

A Vilmos Sebok foul on Alan Shearer produced the visitors goal but the penalty award in the 21st minute looked harsh on the Bristol City defender. Shearer buried with spot kick with a hard drive.

His new strike partner Kevin Phillips had the next best chance but his clever finish caught the legs of the diving goalkeeper and trickled away past the post.

Hungary equalised when Hrutka's freekick caught goalkeeper David Seaman in a poor position dn the captain for the night on his 50th appearance for England let the ball slip through his guard into the net.
