Albania 0 Latvia 0, April 28th 1999

Albania's Foto came out the best in this close match.

Panionios goalkeeper Foto Strakosha saved his side from defeat with a fine save from Bulders' shot in the 80th minute and severely dented Latvian hopes of progressing to the finals next summer.

The visiting players were aware that Norway were scoring a heavy away win in Georgia and the nervous showing in front of goal can be attributed to the realisation that they were about to be knocked off the top of Group Two.

Latvia were unable to get past the solid Albanian defensive line and the negative tactics won out in the end as Albania were able to avoid defeat thanks to Strakosha.

The first half was forgettable until the closing two minutes when Latvia at last negotiated a way past the Albanian limbs and heads to hit the target. Rubins shot from distance was saved by Strakosha and Mikholap scuffed a good chance from a low cross only seconds later.

Latvia sorely missed their excellent young striker Marian Pahars and were unable to make possession tell in terms of shots throughout the game.
