Poland 2 Czech Republic 1, April 28th 1999

First Published: Apr 28, 1999

Poland scored in each half against a bright Czech side as they prepared for the home game at the start of June against Bulgaria.

This low key friendly was played against the back drop of more political intrigue as the Polish football authorities continue their stand off against the world governing body and its European arm over the election of new leaders. The row could still escalate to see Polish clubs barred from next season's European competitions and the national team thrown out of Euro 2000 but that is for the future.

The home side went ahead after a low drive in the 16th minute from Trzeciak and their winner was scored at the start of the second half when Artur Wichniarek converted a cross from the left.

The Czechs missed driving midfielder Pavel Nedved who was withdrawn this afternoon after a muscle strain in his ankle. The visitors made a game of it with a Lohvens drive in the 79th minute but were unable to produce a leveller.
