Bayern Munich captain Lothar Matthaus wants to play on for one more season at the top.
The 38 year old is trying to help Bayern to a treble of trophies this season with the climax being the May 26th Champions League final in Barcelona against Manchester United. The 1990 World Cup winner is also still part of the German national team and played on Wednesday night in the defeat by Scotland. Both Franz Beckenbauer and DfB president Egidius Braun have endorsed Matthaus as a future coach of the Germany team. As a midfielder he captained Inter Milan to their last championship success in Italy in 1989 but his recent career has been dominated by a move to the sweeper position behind the defence for club and country.
He has played in the last five World Cup finals but has indicated that he will retire next summer while still playing at the highest level.
