Keane denies agreement exists for Juventus move

First Published: Aug 23, 1999

Manchester United captain Roy Keane has denied that an agreement has been reached for him to sign for Juventus at the start of next year.

The Irish international is free to listen to offers from clubs after January 1st after rejecting a final pay offer from United. The 29 year old's contract with the treble winners ends next summer and United are now unlikely to receive a transfer fee if their captain leaves under the Bosman ruling.

That has led to speculation that a deal or pre contract agreement has been reached with a buying club that will compensate United and see Keane leave in the summer. Juventus are the candidates named in articles linking Keane to Italy but Inter and Lazio are also interested in signing the player. Keane has denied any pre contract deal exists this morning and has reiterated his intention to decide his future at the end of the present campaign. The midfielder scored both United goals in a 2-1 win for the champions at Arsenal yesterday but the game may see an English FA investigation.

Keane clashed with French opponent Patrick Vieira in an ugly incident late in the game that saw several hands raised in anger. The referee took no action but his report may see the FA take some action against the clubs if the match official recommends it.

Meanwhile Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu has denied that he will join United the Champions league deadline of August 31st. The club must have new players registered to play in Europe by that date and the England centre back has been linked during the summer with a move to Old Trafford. United have several defensive injuries and are known to be looking for a central defender.
