Inter decide on swap to get Di Biagio

First Published: Aug 31, 1999

Internazionale have completed the deal to sign Luigi Di Biagio from AS Roma but have negotiated a swap exchange rather than a cash payment.

Roma have accepted midfielder Cristian Zanetti in exchange for the Italian international Di Biagio as Inter cool on moves to sign Manchester United captain Roy Keane in the new year.

The Milan club - who saw world record signing Christian Vieri score three goals in their first league game of the Serie A season - were linked last week with an approach for the Irish international who is free to listen to other offers under the Bosman ruling after failing to sign a new contract with manchester United.

The latest Keene gossip sees Real Madrid making a £4 million a season after tax bid for the player to sign a five year pre contract agreement in January of next year under the direction of their president Lorenzo Sanz. Good performances at the start of the season from England midfielder Steve McManaman has started a vogue in the Spanish capital for Premiership players but Keene was hinting again yesterday in interviews after his side's 5-1 win over Newcastle in his absence that he may still agree a new contract to stay with United.
