Patrick Berger voted Czech Player of the Year

First Published: Dec 15, 1999

Liverpool midfielder Partick Berger has been voted the Czech Republic's Player of the Year by the country's football writers.

Berger faced tough competition as his team mates in the national side produced a ten game unbeaten run to easily qualify for the Euro 2000 finals in June.

The Czechs have been drawn in the toughest section, Group D, with France, Holland and Denmark but their squad is now regarded as one of the strongest in Europe and they contested the 1996 Euro final in which Berger scored from a penalty.

In other Czech news former national team regular Pavel Hapal has decided to quit Spanish side Tenerife after their relegation last season from the Primera Liga. He spent four and a half years with the club but was loaned out last season to Sigma Olomouc and wants to return to the Czech Republic.
