Irish to appeal against ban verdict

First Published: Dec 17, 1999

The Republic of Ireland have been fined £5,000 and seen veteran striker Tony Cascarino banned for four matches after a fight ended their Euro 2000 play-off with Turkey in Bursa last month.

European governing body UEFA has fined the FAI and they intend to appeal against the decision.

37 year old Nancy striker Cascarino was involved in scuffles and punching bouts with two Turkish substitutes after the 0-0 draw and the Irish team were escorted from the pitch by riot police.

Cascarino will miss the first four World Cup qualifying campaign matches starting in September 2000 if the ban is upheld after the Irish appeal.
