Brazil-bound United may rest injured Scholes

Manchester United may leave England international Paul Scholes out of their World Club championship squad.

United face Necaxa of Mexico next week as the eight team tournament starts in Brazil and midfielder Scholes is their major injury worry as the team prepares to fly out to South America tomorrow.

Scholes needs a hernia operation and may be rested to allow him to recover partially from the condition. Surgery would put the player out of action for at least a month and United may delay any operation until later in the season.

The injury doubt over Scholes means that striker Andy Cole is now likely to be included in the squad for the nine day competition.
