Milan decide to go for Barthez

First Published: Feb 26, 1999

AC Milan are ready to spend seven million pounds on French World Cup winning goalkeeper Fabien Barthez.

The Italian giants are keen to settle the deal before the spring with AS Monaco after the collapse of their planned signing of Brazilian Dida last week. Barthez is keen to move to Italy and carry on his fine recent form. The 28 year old is now regarded as the top European goalkeeper after moulding a solid style of play and curbing his charges from the penalty area that marred his early career.

Milan will offer a five year deal and are prepared to double his current wages with Monaco.
