Celtic get Burchill to stay on

First Published: Jan 26, 1999

Glasgow Celtic have sealed a new deal with teenage striker Mark Burchill to keep him with the Scottish champions.

The 18 year old is regarded as the strongest forward prospect in the Scottish game but his present contract with Celtic runs out in the summer and he was a transfer target for Arsenal and Everton in the English Premiership.

The new deal is for four and a half years so under the Bosman ruling Celtic will be looking to sign the player again in 2001 or risk him leaving for nothing provided he makes the expected progress in the game. Burchill's pay will rise significantly under the new contract and the player was keen to sign again with Celts even after English interest was shown in him.
