Arsenal consider Davids project

First Published: Jan 28, 1999

Arsenal scouts have been watching Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids for the past two months and are set to rival any Real Madrid bid for the player this summer.

Davids is expected to follow departing Juve coach Marcello Lippi out of Turin in the close season and is the priority target for European champions Real Madrid under Dutch coach Guus Hiddink. Real were preparing a bid for Davids three weeks ago but the collapse of the proposed transfer of striker Davor Suker to Panathinaikos for £8 million left the Spanish giants without the necessary capital to pursue the player.

Arsenal are keen to sign Davids and their representatives have made several trips to Italy to watch the combative midfield hustler who is a former European Cup winner with Ajax.
