Keane to have more United pay talks next week

First Published: Jul 22, 1999

Manchester United captain Roy Keane will re-open negotiations about a new contract with the treble winners next week - but the two sides have massive differences to settle.

The Irish international rejected a new offer last week for a £28,0000 a week wage with the club who won 2-0 yesterday afternoon in Shanghai against Chinese league leaders Shenhua. United play in Hong Kong at the wend of the week as they prepare of the start of the English season on August 1st with a charity game against Arsenal at Wembley..

Keane has asked for at least £40,000 a week to sign a new deal with United and is free to leave for nothing under the Bosman ruling at the end of next season.

The 31 year old seriously interests Inter, Lazio and particularly Juventus who are prepared to more than double the wages on offer to Keane by United at the moment. The club denied that contract negotiations had stalled last week but the player's agent confirmed the two parties were "a million miles apart" on any agreement. Keane signed for the club in 1993 from Nottingham Forest and was regarded as a high earner but recent deals for Jaap Stam and David Beckham has made Keane eager to seek a pay rise.
