Sepp Blatter has told the German press that Franz Beckenbauer is his "ideal" successor as FIFA president in an interview that boost Germany's attempts to stage the 2006 World Cup.
Beckenbauer - winner in 1974 of the World Cup and coach of the 1990 champions - is heavily involved in the German bid and Blatter told 'Welt am Sonntag' that; "I am not leaving, but when I do Beckenbauer is my ideal successor."
The German legend is president of Bayern Munich but heavily involved in the restructuring of the German national team and the Bundesliga as Brazil hammered the German side 4-0 at the start of the Confederations Cup in Mexico on Saturday. South Africa remain favourites to stage the 2006 finals
