Anelka set for SS Lazio move

First Published: Jun 29, 1999

Nicolas Anelka effectively ended his brief Arsenal career today by saying he would rather play for SS Lazio than return to London.

The player's dream move to Real Madrid now seems to have collapsed as the Spanish side cannot match the £25 million bid from Lazio for the French international.

Arsenal wanted to keep the player signed in January 1997 for £500,000 from PSG but talks collapsed in Paris at the weekend and Anelka seems determined to leave the London club he helped to a domestic league and cup double a year ago. The 20 year old is prepared to join SS Lazio and a deal could be sealed in the next three days.
