Stam injury worries United

First Published: Mar 31, 1999

Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has injured an ankle on national duty with the Dutch squad.

The central defender is the most expensive stopper in the world having cost United £10.8 million last summer and he is now doubtful for the semi final of the Champions League next week at Old Trafford against Juventus.

Stam twisted an ankle badly in a fall while preparing for Holland's friendly tonight against Argentina and was immediately ruled out of contention for that match. He will return to United for treatment today and is likely to miss their Premiership match on Saturday against Wimbledon.
