Ukraine 1 Iceland 1, March 31st 1999

Ukraine remain unbeaten in group four but were unable to dominate a brave Iceland team as many expected.

The home side had promised to go on the attack after a technically impressive draw with the World Cup holders in France last Saturday.

The hard running Icelanders refused to yield though and managed a fight back after losing a goal.

Ukraine took the lead after their passing began to take effect in the second half. Vladislav Vaschyuk hit a hard drive in the 59th minute but Lanus Sigurdsson replied with a shot of his own on 66 minutes to level the scores. Until the end Ukraine mounted several attacks but they were unconvincing against the Iceland defence and they deserved their draw to stay in group four contention.
