Rangers put Charbonnier up for sale

First Published: May 27, 1999

Glasgow Rangers have confirmed this morning that they will listen to offers for their French goalkeeper Lionnel Charbonnier.

The international is valued at around £4 million by the Scottish champions and League Cup winners who meet Glasgow Celtic at Hampden Park on Saturday in the final of the Scottish Cup.

Charbonnier has served a ban from the French squad for quitting a Moscow hotel before his side were due to play a Euro 2000 qualifier last year and had his first season in Scottish football cut short by a cruciate knee ligament but he is an athletic goalkeeper and was popular with the Rangers support.

If no acceptable bids arrive then the French player will probably stay with the Rangers squad next season but the club are hoping for a sale. Their French striker Stephane Guivarc'h has been in negotiations with former club Auxerre about a return in the summer but the striker's wages remain a difficult obstacle for the French side to over come.
